In today’s economy being smart with your money has become a necessity. Many have lost money due to unwise investments and even those that invested wisely have lost money.

After working hard for the money you earn, it is important to know how to make investments that will maximize the amount of money your money can make for you. There are a large number of people in our society that wisely invest their money in the stock market and find their investments to be very lucrative.

Investing in the stock market can be a tricky affair. You have to be familiar with the different stock markets and the different types of stocks within the stock markets.

It is a common misconception that there is only one stock market in the United States and that it is within this stock market that all stocks are being traded and bought. People can get this idea ingrained when they hear terms like “the stock market crash”.

When we read about “the stock market crash” we are not reading about a single stock market that has crashed, but rather the author is telling us that during that period of time the collective stock market crashed. When there is a common trend between stock markets, many of the men and women in the industry discuss the stock markets as a single stock market.

The easiest way to understand what a stock market does is to have a complete understanding of what a stock is. A company sells many shares of its stock; each share is a unit of ownership in a company.

So, in essence, if you own a share of a company’s stock, you are a part owner of the company. With this ownership comes the opportunity to participate in the company’s decision making processes.

You can attend the meetings of the board of directors and you have the right to vote on decisions made at these meetings. Often times the number of shares you hold in the company is proportionate to how your vote is weighted.

When the company is making money and doing well the price of the company’s stock will increase and if you decided to sell your shares at this point you would be able to profit the difference of the prices. Many companies also distribute profits to shareholders; the profits will be proportionate to how many shares you hold in the company.

Many invest in stocks because it is relatively safe. You can only loose the amount of money you invest.

If the company you have invested money with ends up losing a lot of money the worst that can happen to you is the price of the stock becomes worthless. At this point you can either ride it out or hope that the price of the stock increases or you can sell somebody else your stock.

Within the stock markets there are two types of stock. Most stock that the common individual holds are common stock but there is also a preferred stock.

A common stock is the kind of stock that we have been discussing throughout the article. When one holds a common stock he or she has voting rights and also has the right to share in dividends.

Preferred stock may sound that it gives its shareholders more rights in a company, but it is quite the opposite. The preferred stock has fewer rights than common stock, except in dividends.

The companies that offer preferred stock are limited, but they are the companies that pay consistent dividends. The preferred stock holders have first priority to the dividends over the common stock holders.

Investors utilize preferred stock by buying the stock from companies that are making large profits. The large profit margin gives the preferred stock holders profit on their investment.

The stock market is very liquid. This means that the stock market is constantly in a state of movement and change.

The majority of large companies that have made themselves public are buying, selling and trading their stock everyday on the market. As prices of different stocks rise and fall, the face of the stock market will change accordingly.

The stocks are traded on “the floor” in New York City. This area is a gathering spot for investors to buy and sell trades as they see the trends of the stock market for the day.

Knowing what stocks are and how they function will help you as you invest your money in the stock market. Learning the best ways to invest your money in the stock market may take some time but will be well worth it in the long run.
